Research and Investigation into Anomalous Light Phenomena
on and over Lake Ontario, Ontario, Canada
11th August 2001
Niagara-on-the-Lake
Above: Still image taken with Pentax SLR attached to Celestron 8"
reflector showing descending and disappearing amber lights/objects.
I set up the video camera in a local park on the South shore of Lake Ontario and approximately 10 feet above the lake's surface. Based on elevation, the horizon (where sky meets water) would be approximately four miles distant.
(Ref: T. Roy Dutton's chart to calculate horizon.)
I also set up the Pentax SLR attached to the Celestron 8" reflector telescope on a heavy duty tripod so that I could take still images. (See image above)
The Pentax still images showed the colours far better than those in the video footage. (See example video frame below)
Close by were a number of visitors having their evening meal at a picnic table and all the activity including the loud dragging of the picnic table was present in the audio. A large motorcycle also stopped a couple of times, making a lot of noise and exuding nasty fumes. The motorcycle's noisy first stop occurred at the same time as a large lake freighter was travelling by from East to West.
The far shore of the lake and Toronto would have been almost 29 miles distant from my camera.
This map shows the distance from my camera to the nearer of the two Toronto airports. The small Toronto Island airport would be 28.63 miles distant while Toronto Pearson International Airport would be 38.8 miles distant.
Later in the evening of 11th August 2001 and still more light balls continued their descent. At times I was wondering if some of the objects/light balls were actually aircraft but then they would display the familiar flaring up characteristic with a beam or reflection showing below the light source.
At a camera elevation of 10 feet above the water's surface that would suggest a distance to horizon of approximately four miles. This is based on the chart provided by the late T. Roy Dutton.
(Ref: The late T. Roy Dutton provided the horizon calculation chart. See our web page for details.)
The final event in this video at 10:45:40 pm was a light ball suddenly appearing and travelling steadily from right to left - East to West - finally apparently submerging.
Video was again recorded on Digital-8 format tape.
